The journal for musical culture “Muzika” is the first post-war magazine for publishing original scientific and professional papers in the fields of musicology, ethnomusicology, music theory, and music education. Since 1997, it has been continuously published by the Music Academy of the University of Sarajevo and the Musicological Society of FBiH.

High levels of professional reflection on the music phenomenon and significant experience in artistic practice, as results of decades of organized and conceptualized music education in Bosnia and Herzegovina, created the conditions for establishing a music journal under the auspices of the Music Academy in Sarajevo. It aimed to overcome the lack of serious writing about music. A group of teachers from this institution, also members of the Initiative Committee for the establishment of the Musicological Society, led by Dr. Ivan Čavlović, along with Dr. Selma Ferović, Mr. Miroslava Fulanović-Šošić, Dr. Vinko Krajtmajer, Prof. Milorad Milić, Mr. Jasna Spaić, and then-dean Mr. Faruk Sijarić, initiated the journal as a contribution to the development and study of musical culture in Bosnia and Herzegovina in the post-war context. It aimed to promote Bosnian-Herzegovinian scientific and artistic achievements beyond its borders, as well as to collect and present internationally relevant contemporary practices to the local audience. Initial expectations included exploring the unexplored, explaining the unexplained, resolving doubts, and providing authoritative judgment in the field of musical culture.

From the beginning, the focus of the journal has been on a thorough examination of musical phenomena in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the region, and the world, viewed through the lens of musicological, ethnomusicological, theoretical, and pedagogical research. The breadth of the field is confirmed by the (generalized) name of the journal (Muzika). Although primarily tailored for a professional readership, the journal aimed to bring the content of music journalism closer to a slightly wider readership.

The initial program concept, set out in the first issue by editor-in-chief Ivan Čavlović and the editorial board at the time—deputy editor-in-chief Maja Baralić, as well as eminent professors Dr. Selma Ferović, Dr. Vinko Krajtmajer, Mr. Jasna Spaić, Milorad Milić, Rada Nuić, Mr. Faruk Sijarić, Tamara Karača, and Tatjana Pandurević—focused on systematically covering and presenting the musical heritage and tradition of the people of Bosnia and Herzegovina. It also aimed to monographically and synthetically address historical events and trends in the music of Bosnia and Herzegovina, follow and interpret phenomena in contemporary Bosnian music, describe and explore global music phenomena through historical and contemporary perspectives, develop musicological activities in Bosnia and Herzegovina, affirm music and music science in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and promote Bosnian-Herzegovinian music and music science globally. The ambitiously conceived ideas about the “Muzika” journal and its role in local culture and musical life made it the only journal of its kind in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Professor Čavlović remained at the helm of the editorial board until 2007, after which the role of editor-in-chief was taken over by Dr. Tamara Karača Beljak, followed by Dr. Lana Šehović, and today by Dr. Fatima Hadžić.

Content-wise, the journal consists of four sections that also form its core. The central part is the “Scientific Articles” section, presenting achievements in the world of musicology supported by original theoretical and empirical research. The “Professional Articles” and “Recognition Papers” sections present scientific knowledge to expand musicological knowledge and introduce the public to musicological issues. The fourth section, “Journalism,” aims to follow recent events in the music life of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the region through reviews, reports, interviews, and reviews.

The editorial board is open to collaboration with music writers from Bosnia and Herzegovina, neighboring, European, and world countries. Thus, articles by authors from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Serbia, Slovenia, as well as Austria, Norway, Sweden, Turkey, the United Kingdom, and the United States, have been published in the journal.

The journal for musical culture “Muzika,” published twice a year, has positioned itself as one of the leading publications of its kind in the region and is recognized internationally. It is indexed in prominent scientific databases such as RILM (Répertoire International de la Littérature Musicale), ERIH PLUS (The European Reference Index for the Humanities and the Social Sciences), EBSCO Information Services, and CEEOL (Central and East European Open Library). The renowned members of the International Editorial Board, consisting of distinguished names in international musicology, further contribute to its prestige.
